Building on the success and learning of the 2019 Corangamite Shire Energy Efficiency Pilot Project delivered in partnership with Geelong Sustainability, this project created further impact – specifically supporting vulnerable people in the north Corangamite Shire northern ward.
The Corangamite Energy Efficiency Project 2.0 identified and engaged with nine low-income households in the towns of Lismore, Derrinallum and Skipton. The project aimed to improve thermal efficiency and reduce energy costs by implementing household energy efficiency retrofits as identified and prioritised in the energy assessment, with a budget of $5,000 per household.
Each household received an in-home energy assessment to develop tailored energy reduction and retrofit plans. Geelong Sustainability collated a comprehensive list of retrofit recommendations for each household, and determined which retrofits could be undertaken within project budget constraints.
Geelong Sustainability managed the request for quotes and activation of approved suppliers. Five contractors were engaged to deliver over 30 retrofits for the 9 participants of the project. The retrofits included draught proofing, ceiling and underfloor insulation, reverse cycle air conditioners and solar power.
The retrofits improved the efficiency of the participants’ homes from an average of 4.7 stars to an average rating of 7.3 stars, a significant improvement of 2.6 stars.*

All participants were pleased with the outcomes of the project and many were extremely grateful for the support received from Corangamite Shire Council and Geelong Sustainability. The impact of the home upgrades was noticed immediately by most participants. A few examples are included below.
Participant 1: Was very happy with the Air Conditioner and how well it worked and had already noticed the difference the insulation made to the home.
Participant 5: Received their first electricity bill since the installation of the solar system, it was only $3!
Participant 8: Noticed the improvement in thermal comfort immediately following the Draught Proofing retrofits.
Participant 9: Expressed how pleased she was about the Draught Proofing work and the program overall.
