Showcase Seminars

Building Materials: The Big Decisions
Planning a new build, a renovation or an iso DIY project? Whatever the project’s scale, it’s important to select the big-ticket items carefully. Materials selection for floors, walls, roofing, windows and cabinetry are expensive decisions.
In this seminar, local building professionals will discuss contemporary building techniques and the relevant costs and properties of current building materials.
Our expert panel includes an architect, a builder, a sustainability consultant, an energy rater and a window manufacturer. Get practical answers to your big questions.

Case Studies: Going Off Gas
Fancy an all-electric home powered by our own rooftop solar? Sounds great, but the actual process of "going off gas" can be tricky and confusing. In this practical seminar, local homeowners will explain how they did it, what it cost and whether it was worth it.
We’ll look at the 3 key appliances: heat pump hot water systems, reverse cycle air conditioners and induction cooktops. Plus a local electrician and plumber will share their industry knowledge and answer your technical questions.

Case Study: Climate Safe Rooms
What is a Climate Safe Room? This innovative project retrofitted the homes of 15 local residents to give them a safe haven during summer and winter extremes. Objective energy data guided the works, which included draught-proofing and installing insulation and a high efficiency air-conditioning plus a small rooftop solar system to offset running costs. The seminar will explore the significant learnings for how to cost-effectively retrofit existing homes.
Case Study: Samaritan Social Housing
This innovative social house project is helping to address Geelong’s critical shortage of affordable rental housing whilst enabling architecture students to create clever design solutions using world-leading construction methods.
Prefab21 is a prefabricated, 40-square metre house that’s designed to be comfortable, sustainable and affordable. In this showcase seminar, learn more about this collaboration between Samaritan House Geelong, Deakin University and FormFlow.
