This is a fun way to give your body and brain a boost.  Try new places and meet new faces.

    What’s it all about?

Park and Street Orienteering provides the perfect combination of mental and physical exercise. You do not need a compass or any special map-reading ability. However, it will test your thinking while giving you a great workout in a friendly, safe, outdoor environment.

  • Green Drinks - Frugal Hedonism

Geelong Sustainability's monthly social networking event – Geelong Green Drinks – is a great way to learn about what's new and happening in our region and to connect with others working in the sustainability sector.

Theme: Frugal Hedonism - a mindset for making less better

Keynote Speaker: Annie Raser-Rowland, artist, author & horticulturalist at CERES nursery in Brunswick

    March_Drinks_Banner2.jpg

Our March Green Drinks theme is definitely a timely topic that aligns with the OPL principles of Zero Waste and Health and Happiness. Annie has recently published an insightful 'how to' book titled, The Art of Frugal Hedonism. Written in collaboration with Adam Grubb, the book provides a toolkit of mind and habit-shifting tips to help us positively look forward to living lower-consumption lifestyles.  Annie wants to tell you why frugality is not a lifestyle to be pitied, but rather envied – when done with some mindfulness and a bit of philosophy up your sleeve.

Her earlier bestseller, The Weed Forager’s Handbook, examined the under acknowledged pleasures of free wild greens. Copies of both books will be available for purchase on the night. Click here to listen to a recent interview with Annie on The Sustainable Hour.

Be informed - Be inspired - Be connected

Each year, we plan a diverse program with a mix of informative presentations, interactive workshops and enviro movies focused on key sustainability topics such as Energy, Waste, Environment, Food, Water, Housing and Community. Our monthly themes also align with specific principles in the One Planet Living framework.

We also provide several pop-up spots so people can promote future events, projects and campaigns. Contact the event organiser to book a spot.

In 2017, Green Drinks will be normally held on the third Wednesday at Beav's Bar, 77 Little Malop Street from 5.30-7.30pm. Click here to download the 2017 flyer.

Come along and join in this fun and informative networking event. See you there!

  • Life Learning - Decluttering Mindfully: KonMari Basics

    What’s it all about?

Do you want to declutter your life, live simply and be organised?

    Decluttering.jpg

Can you imagine living a life where you don’t have to spend hours tidying, hours running around searching for stuff that you’ve lost or having to purchase something again because you've 'lost' the original!

Instead imagine a life where you feel absolutely in control, where you feel free to pursue your goals in life. Yep sounds great doesn’t it?

This class can help you on the path to this. The KonMari method focuses on what you want to keep in your life without the clutter. Simplifying your life can help you to create space to achieve all of those things that you long for.

    What will we cover?

This interactive class will introduce you to the basics of KonMari. We will discuss the process and identify some of the personal benefits that can be achieved from working through the KonMari Method. We will even get to practice some of the folding techniques to put you right on track to achieving harmony in your life.

Learn how to go beyond the notion of tidying and start the process of removing from your life all of the things that no longer bring you joy.

    Who will be teaching?

Janine Hendry an interior designer has peeked into many homes. Along the way she has concluded that we are deeply impacted upon by the spaces that we inhabit. The state of our homes can hold us back from achieving what we want in life, and the first stage of creating an inspiring home must come with removing from our homes, all that stuff that no longer brings us joy.

Janine is the founder of A Mindful Home an interior design consultancy that uses the KonMari method to help clients create soulful nurturing homes.

    Any questions?

This class is proving extremely popular and the class from 6.15-7.30 is SOLD OUT!

Click here to attend the second Class @ 8pm

Please email lifelearning@geelongsustainability.org.au if you have any questions or want to put your name on a waiting list.

  • Life Learning - Exploring Greek Music: The Bouzouki and Beyond

    What’s it all about?

Rebetika is the name of a form and style of music which heavily influenced what we now recognise as Greek popular music.

    6799510860_1e21bab303_z.jpg

It evolved in the early 20thC  in the urban ghettos of Athens as the music of the poor (and the underworld). Sometimes described as the ‘Greek blues’ for its themes of love, despair, poverty, drug use and social comment it was popularised through the film ‘Zorba the Greek’ and the music of Mikis Theodorakis.  It is universally recognised today.

Image illustrated by Dimitra Tzanos under Creative Commons Licence.

    What will we cover?

‘The Greek Connection’ will demonstrate the unique features of this musical style from its characteristic scales to its complex rhythms and instrumentation.

The influence of the bouzouki as a solo instrument with vocals, over a backing of guitar and piano-accordion will demonstrate the development of the style.

    Who will be teaching?

‘The Greek Connection’ is Ilias Maniatakis (bouzouki and vocals), John Hughson (guitar) and Sue Buchan (piano accordion).

Ilias with his Greek heritage, virtuosic skill on bouzouki and voice leads this group which is well-known at multi-cultural festivals and Greek functions locally.  Sue is a skilled music teacher and pianist and John plays jazz guitar when he is not embracing some family roots through Greek music.

  • Life Learning - Knots Away: Self Massage

    What’s it all about?

Do you find yourself needing to work out the aches and pains after a day in the office or an afternoon on the sports field?

Why not try a bit of self-massage? Guaranteed to loosen the muscles and make you feel feel amazing!

    What will we cover?

We will cover the basics of how to self massage forearms, hands, neck and shoulders. Including:

    • Where to find the good spots and what to do with “knots” when you do,
    • Self care tools the experts recommend to help with repetition and fatigue,
    • Stretches for when you’re too tired to stretch,
    • Some theory about how these three areas hang together and affect one another through daily use.

It’s not a substitute for remedial therapy but it will make you feel pretty great! And you’ll go home with some materials to keep up the good work.

Please wear a top with short sleeves or ones that can be rolled up past the elbow comfortably.

    Who will be teaching?

Clare developed a fascination with the human form and function through life drawing, dance and being uncoordinated at sports - this led her to roll up her sleeves and get hands on. She has been a Myotherapist for 7 years since arriving in Melbourne from the UK in 2007. In her spare time she reads books about neuroplasticity and is collaborating to develop a mindfulness based chronic pain management program.
