About the house
Georgina de Beaujeu is the Co-Chair of Geelong Gardens for Wildlife. Geelong Gardens for Wildlife encourages Geelong residents to make their gardens more wildlife friendly. They offer property visits by trained volunteer garden guides, a ‘Design your own Garden for wildlife’ workshop and have developed the Geelong Pollinator Garden – see here for details on the pollinator garden: https://www.geelongaustralia.com.au/ct/article/item/8dd9867d11755a7.aspx For more information on Geelong Gardens for Wildlife visit: https://www.geelongaustralia.com.au/gardensforwildlife/default.aspx
Georgina views this garden as test bed for her work with the Geelong Gardens for Wildlife group. While a large garden the various spaces within the site offer inspiration for smaller urban gardens and promote wildlife gardening principles, including testing the performance of local indigenous plants species in a residential garden setting.
Since 2018 when the property was bought the following areas have been developed;
- a propagation and composting area with chicken coup
- a naturalistic woodland way
- a frog wetland
- undercover vegetable garden with wicking beds
- cottage style garden
- stone ‘ha ha’ garden that emulates a nature strip garden.
- seating areas to connect with nature, including reclaiming an old concrete tank as an entertaining area
- Creek restoration project undertaken with neighbours
Come and have a tour of the garden on the hour; 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm to learn about how the garden has embedded wildlife gardening principles to foster a diversity of wildlife from birds to bats to insect pollinators.
