Climate Resilience Training

Geelong Sustainability is proud to partner with The Resilience Canopy to bring their transformative community resilience training program to our region for the first time.

As climate impacts and social challenges continue to intensify, it’s never been more important to build strong, connected, and prepared communities. The Resilience Canopy Practitioner Training equips people with the tools, confidence, and frameworks to do exactly that, and we’re calling on passionate community members, changemakers, and local leaders to be part of this movement.

We are back offering our Climate Resilience Practitioner Training for 2026! After an successful and booked out training in 2025 we are looking forward to another wonderful program, register interest below.

What is The Resilience Canopy?

The Resilience Canopy is a nationally recognised program developed by ResilientCo that supports local communities to design and deliver their own climate resilience plans. By focusing on the specific strengths, vulnerabilities, and aspirations of each community, the program helps build long-term capacity to manage shocks and stressors- from extreme weather events to social and economic disruption.

At the heart of this work is the belief that community-led action is essential. With the right training and support, local people can guide their communities through change with courage, care, and clarity.

Why Become a Resilience Practitioner?

Participants in the Resilience Canopy training gain:

  • A deep understanding of what makes communities resilient
  • Skills to assess risks, vulnerabilities, and strengths
  • Proven tools to engage communities in meaningful action
  • Access to the national Canopy Collective network for mentoring, support, and peer learning
  • Eligibility to apply for Activation Grants to fund your community’s resilience projects (conditions apply)

You’ll learn how to apply the program’s Six-Step Model, a practical roadmap to help communities develop local climate resilient plans and implement unique solutions.

Is the training for you?

Whether you're a community volunteer, local organiser, or someone working in government, health, education or the not-for-profit sector, this training is for you.

Climate resilience is essential in the face of the growing climate emergency, but its benefits go far beyond disaster response. Building climate resilience means equipping communities with the tools, plans, and connections they need to adapt, thrive and lead through uncertainty.

At Geelong Sustainability, we’re committed to growing a network of resilience hubs across the region, places where people are working together to assess local risks, identify shared strengths, and create practical, community-led climate resilience plans. This work supports communities to prepare for climate impacts like heatwaves, storms, and supply disruptions, while also building stronger social connection, local leadership, and long-term wellbeing.

If you’re a passionate community member, active volunteer, or someone connected to a school, sporting club, church, neighbourhood house, or community group - you can become a trained Resilience Canopy facilitator. You don’t need to be an expert, just someone who is willing, open, and has the capacity to walk alongside your community as they build resilience from the ground up.

The training will be delivered across four sessions. Attendance at all four sessions is required. You’ll receive a training handbook, a digital toolkit, and access to mentoring, resources, and ongoing support for up to 24 months.
