Join us for an engaging Industry Breakfast at Deakin University, a unique opportunity for professionals and those wanting to upskill or learn about sustainable building and design to come together. Enjoy a delicious catered breakfast while networking with key industry people. 

Our keynote speaker, Brendan Condon, will explore the future of housing design, focusing on sustainability, resilience, energy efficiency, retrofitting and low running costs. Drawing from his extensive experience, Brendan will showcase how houses can be designed, built, and retrofitted to be more sustainable, comfortable, and cost-effective using common building practices and materials. Learn from real-world projects delivered by his teams, demonstrating effective strategies for creating better-designed, more efficient, and lower-cost buildings. 

Participants will also hear from Deakin University’s Tom Keel, an expert in sustainable building and design, who will introduce MOTIIVES, an innovative tool designed to educate our community on sustainable building design and home operation.

This event is a fantastic opportunity to enhance our local capacity for building sustainable homes and securing a sustainable future. 

The Industry Breakfast will begin at 8.00am with a buffet breakfast, and presentations starting at 8.20am. We aim to conclude the event by 9.45am. 

Speaker Bio:

Brendan Condon

Brendan Condon has a remarkable track record, including the development of a Victorian sustainable housing estate with significant financial benefits, which included large-scale restoration of nature and biodiversity. His other projects include ‘The Cape’ a sustainable community on Victoria’s Bass Coast, which is an award-winning housing development for sustainable living. At ‘The Cape, the 8-star energy efficient homes are all electric, powered by solar energy, and utilise the natural solar-passive design for heating and cooling. Brendan’s design and construction guidelines for homes in the estate has led to highly energy efficient homes and a thriving sustainable community. Resident’s comfortable homes have no gas bills, minimal electricity bills and over 30 percent of the homes are paired with electric vehicles powered by solar. The community is also pioneering local food production througha $2.5 million productive on-site community farm.

Tom Keel

Tom Keel is a dedicated academic at Deakin University, specialising in sustainable property design and development. With a Masters Degree and extensive field experience, he strives to improve the built environment so that homes are more comfortable, more energy efficient and have a smaller carbon footprint.

At Deakin University, Tom plays a crucial role in both teaching and research. His lectures are known for their engaging style and insightful perspectives, inspiring students to critically analyse property related environmental issues and develop practical solutions. His research focuses on sustainable land use practices and sustainable living conditions.

 

Designing the communities of the future – resilient, energy efficient, solar powered and low running costs

Brendan will demonstrate how houses can be designed, built (and retrofitted) to make them more sustainable, comfortable and cheaper to run, simply using common building practices and materials. In doing so, he will present his learnings from a wide range of real-world leading projects that his teams have delivered to create a better designed, more efficient, lower cost buildings.

 

MOTIIVES is a simple assessment tool that any homeowner and occupant can use to help understand the design and sustainability of their home and learn how to make improvements. MOTIIVES is an 8-step process that covers both Energy Efficiency as well as all other aspects of sustainability including orientation, materials and occupant behaviour.
