The waste problem is a huge part of the climate and sustainability challenge. It’s clear to see that we simply can’t continue to use up the planet’s finite resources; we need a more circular solution. Luckily, there are plenty of amazing local leaders working towards solutions, right in our backyard!
We heard from a few of these leaders at our Circular Living Green Drinks on Wednesday 31 May at 1915.
We were very lucky to welcome back Fraser Telfer, who played a lovely acoustic set as people arrived. The upstairs space at 1915 was a beautiful setting for some networking with delicious cocktails and canapes.
The panel kicked off with Katherine, owner of Valerie’s Pantry. Katherine spoke about her journey into the world of wholefoods, with her takeaway message being “It doesn’t matter where you start, whether you just come in for oats, or shampoo, or beans. Start small, and build from there.”
Next we heard from Emily, owner of Emipeli Design. Emily told us about her roundabout journey into sustainable fashion, from working overseas as a costume designer and make-up artist, to returning back to Australia and pursuing an old interest in a new way. She spoke about falling into sustainability out of necessity, and the importance of slow fashion.
Finally, Meg from Transition Streets Geelong reminded us that at the core of everything lies community. Transition Streets exists to foster and encourage community as a solution to the waste problem, the climate crisis, and so much more. Meg read us a list of all the amazing things she has received, shared and learned in the last month as a result of Transition Streets, from shared meals to community-garden-grown food.
After each of the panellists spoke, we were able to have a 15 minute panel Q & A with some really insightful audience questions.
A huge thank you to 1915 restaurant for hosting us, and to the City of Greater Geelong for funding the 2023 Green Drinks series.
