Geelong Sustainability recently had the pleasure of contributing to Geelong College’s Futures Week, an event dedicated to encouraging Year 9 students to explore their future. Over four enriching days, we engaged with approximately 160 enthusiastic students, inspiring them to think critically about climate change, sustainability and the significant roles they can play in shaping a better future.

Held at the picturesque Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club, our sessions combined educational seminars with hands-on interactive workshops. This setting not only provided a stunning backdrop but also a tangible connection to nature, reinforcing the importance of environmental conservation.

Interactive and Engaging Learning
The workshops were designed to be both informative and engaging. Students participated in a variety of activities both inside and outside.

When a break in the showers allowed, each group headed down to the beach for an immersive experience where they learnt about the importance of protecting our oceans. These discussions were pivotal in highlighting the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems and the urgent need for conservation efforts. To foster creativity and teamwork, students competed in building sandcastles themed around marine life. This fun activity not only encouraged them to think about marine biodiversity but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards protecting these creatures.

Learning was made fun with a series of interactive games, reinforcing key concepts about sustainability and climate change. Students eagerly participated, driven by the excitement of winning prizes.

Focused Areas of Learning
The workshops were crafted by Geelong Sustainability’s dedicated team members, Karina Donkers and Emilie Flynn, who led the sessions with energy and expertise. They focused on four critical areas:

  • Climate Change: Educating students about the science of climate change, its impacts, and what can be done to mitigate its effects.
  • Ocean Conservation: Highlighting the importance of preserving marine ecosystems and the actions needed to protect our oceans.
  • Plastic Pollution: Raising awareness about the detrimental impact of plastic waste on the environment and exploring sustainable alternatives.
  • Future of Jobs: Guiding students to envision future career opportunities in sustainability, emphasising that their passions and skills can contribute to a greener world.

Looking Ahead
Geelong Sustainability is committed to nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards. By equipping students with knowledge and inspiring them through engaging activities, we aim to foster a lifelong commitment to sustainability. Our involvement in Geelong College’s Futures Week is just one of the many initiatives we undertake to create a more sustainable and connected community.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and creativity shown by the students and look forward to seeing how they will contribute to a sustainable future.
