The Project

The Geelong Circular Living Challenge was an online, gamified challenge developed and delivered in partnership with Circular Economy Victoria, with the support of Sustainability Victoria’s Recycling Communities Grant.

The Challenge aimed to engage the greater Geelong community and local businesses in the transition to a circular economy. To do this, Geelong Sustainability partnered with local circular businesses and organisations to deliver the Challenge, and to bring to life the circular concepts and principles through a range of events and seminars that focused on circularity. This included a series of business seminars, practical workshops, and the inaugural Circular Living Show.

The Results

Through a diverse range of weekly topics and challenges, participants learned about the circular economy and explored how sustainable behaviours can be embedded in different areas of their lives.

Each week there were opportunities to put learnings into practice by engaging with local traders and community organisations, completing surveys and quizzes, and through hands-on workshops, events and seminars.

Every time participants completed a challenge, they earned points towards achieving Circularity Champion status, with prizes awarded at the end. We partnered with some incredible local, sustainable businesses who generously contributed prizes and offered product and service discounts to Challenge participants.

The Challenge was a huge success which resulted in an estimated 5.4 Tonne landfill reduction across the eight weeks of the project. The goal was to facilitate behaviour change for Geelong residents when it comes to waste and plastic habits. Given roughly 1,860 residents were involved with the Challenge, we consider this goal achieved.
