Our Climate Safe Rooms project made national news headlines last night with a feature on ABC News TV.

This important project is about protecting those who are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.  We upgraded one room in 16 low-income households in the Geelong region, where at least one resident had a chronic health condition that put them at risk from heatwaves and extreme cold, to provide a safe place to go during extreme weather.

After two years of data monitoring our initial results indicate that the project has been a success. With improvements in energy affordability, home comfort, participant physical and mental health. We are currently in the process of completing the data analysis and final report, which will be released mid-year.

More funding for projects like this are needed now more than ever. Particularly as we head towards winter with both gas and electricity prices on the increase. Many people in our community are struggling to pay the rent and put food on the table.

We need to protect our most vulnerable and ensure no one is left behind in this energy transition. The up-front cost to make upgrades to the home and the poor energy efficiency of Victoria’s housing stock need to be addressed urgently.
