Climate Campaigns

This decade is critical if we are to prevent runaway climate change. It’s everyone’s responsibility - citizens, businesses and all levels of government.

Geelong Sustainability is active in the campaign space, driving several Geelong- and region-wide campaigns. Our current major active campaigns are:

We are experiencing unprecedented extreme weather, floods, droughts, catastrophic bushfires, heart-breaking wildlife losses and devastated communities – Australia no longer feels like the ‘lucky country’.

Around the world, people looked at Australia as proof positive of the link between climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. As one of the most vulnerable nations in the world to climate change, it is in our best interests to act immediately.

We must rapidly decarbonise our homes, consumer choices, energy supply, workplaces and economy. Fortunately, the solutions already exist and can drive new employment and economic opportunities. Geelong Sustainability wants to empower people to take positive action.

We’re advocating loudly to build government, business and community support to reduce the use of fossil fuels and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

What We Want

Climate Action Now! It’s the critical decade, we must act now to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

  • Net-zero emissions for our region by 2035
  • No LNG import terminals in Corio Bay
  • Accelerate both renewable energy and electrification
  • No new coal and gas mines
  • A fast and fair transition - that leaves no one behind

Our Strategy

Strategic Priority 1.
Advocate strongly for urgent action on climate change at all levels of Government

  • We represent our Members by continuing to advocate strongly at the local, state and federal levels for ambitious science based targets and effective action on climate change.
  • Our CEO and Board Members hold regular structured meetings with MPs, Ministers and senior officials from all levels of Government.
  • We respond to public policy development and make formal submissions to Government inquiries.

Strategic Priority 2.
Build broad consensus for a G21 regional target of net-zero emissions by 2035

  • Build a coalition of local businesses, councils and local authorities who support net-zero emissions by 2035.
  • We actively contribute to and drive our agenda through a number of regionally significant networks, partnerships and advisory committees.

    Strategic Priority 3.
    Build an unstoppable community movement

    • Deliver public engagement and education activities to inform and inspire our community.
    • Partner and collaborate with like minded organisations to increase our impact, including Geelong Renewables not Gas and A Real Deal Geelong.
    • Empower our community to act on Climate Change through active participation in our campaigns
    • Provide practical information and actions residents and businesses can take to reduce emissions.
    • Reach disengaged residents through positive solution focused stories in local media.
    • Build our power base by engaging new supporters online and in person at our events.
