Sustainable House Day is our most popular annual event. It gives people the opportunity to see inside houses that have been designed, built, renovated or retro-fitted with sustainability in mind.
2017 Geelong date has been set for Sunday 15 October

Geelong Sustainability was delighted to coordinate Sustainable House Day (SHD) in 2016 with support from the City of Greater Geelong for the eighth year on Sunday 16th October. SHD aligns closely with our mission, which is to inform, inspire and connect communities to create a sustainable future and to protect our natural environment. The event helps to raise awareness and readiness of Geelong residents to adopt and install energy efficiency practices and technologies to facilitate Geelong’s transition to a low carbon future.
For SHD2016, there were 14 properties open to the public for four hours on Sunday 16th October. Homes within suburban Geelong opened from 10am to 2pm and those on the Bellarine and surrounding region from 1pm to 5pm. It proved to be another fabulous event at which loads of information and knowledge were shared. To offset event expenses, adults were asked to pay an entry fee of $2/house. While afternoon showers adversely affected visitor numbers, many people chose to stay longer at each house enabling them to learn more.
All homeowners and experts reported having a rewarding day sharing their insights and journeys. Visitors were able to get inspirational ideas and practical advice from the home owners and local experts. At many locations, people found architects, builders, renewable energy experts and permaculture/gardening gurus who conducted tours and/or shared their expertise.
There were over 1900 visits across the open houses with most recording between 90 – 180 visits. The Drent’s compact design home in Ocean Grove was the busiest home with 240 visitors - the advert in the Surf Coast Times possibly sparked extra interest. This major community event involved over 90 volunteers of whom 35 were technical experts.
We were delighted to have our hard work coordinating Sustainable House Day for our region recognised by Gayle Tierney MP, Member for Western Victoria in the Legislative Council on 27 October.
