What we do?

Life Learning is affordable, community-driven, fun education in Geelong.

We host informal classes for curious people looking to try something new without a hefty price tag! Our classes are an affordable $12 (+materials if required) with a discount for GS members.

All of our course topics are dreamed up under the One Planet Living Principles of Health & Happiness, Culture & Community and Sustainability.

Topics like life skills, language, craft, sustainability, food, psychology, science, social issues, art, dance, literature, music, DIY, gardening, design, philosophy and relaxation are on our ‘to do’ list.

Most of all we encourage people to learn interesting ‘new stuff’ in a fun, social environment.

We are also open to suggestions for classes.

What are classes like?

Classes will run for 1.25 hrs in cafes, bars, galleries and other vibrant spaces. There will be a maximum of 20-25 people so it creates a fun learning environment and social vibe. Many of the classes will be interactive and there will be an opportunity to meet new people simply by learning a new skill.

Every class is totally different. Some of our teachers are pros at what they do, some are hobbyists or enthusiasts; it’s just about sharing knowledge they are excited about.

No matter what the class or who is teaching, our classes are laid back, fun, and participatory. Your involvement in class - whether through discussion or something hands on - is what makes it all the more enjoyable.

Please Note: Classes are for adults only.

Who can teach?

You just need a passion for the topic and a desire to share it with others.  We assist with the planning, take care of sign ups and marketing so you can focus on the important stuff of just inspiring others.

The idea is to offer informal classes to curious people wanting to learn something new!  It is a place to experiment with topics, hobbies and new ideas.

Bibliotherapy: Change Your Life Through Literature

  • Life Learning - Bibliotherapy: Change Your Life Through Literature

    Bibliotherapy.png
    What’s it all about?

Bibliotherapy, a fusion of the science of psychology and the art of literature, is having a comeback as a therapy. Bibliotherapy can be analogised to a pirate pillaging a book for its treasures.  The treasures are essentially to seek solace and perspective in life, and great creative literature does that by offering stories which reflect different models of human thinking, feeling and being.  These stories capture your imagination sending you on a powerful journey of self-exploration opening up your mind to new ideas and possibilities.  And therein lies the transformative appeal of a great book.

    What will we cover?

There will be a presentation examining the emotional, psychological and social benefits of reading for pleasure, drawing on recent research.  Afterwards, the class will form small, intimate shared reading circles where you as readers, get a chance to read aloud from a classic short story, pausing every so often to share immediate personal reflections and ideas stimulated by the story. This 'slow' reading will leave you feeling both serene and creatively revived.

    Who will be teaching?

Sonya is a bibliotherapist with The School of Life, where she conducts one-to-one sessions of literary therapy with Australian and international clients.  Sonya also pioneered the social enterprise, The Literary Hand, www.literaryhand.com which aims to foster community cohesion and wellbeing using literature, by leading shared reading circles in community settings and hosting literary salons. Naturally, Sonya is a lifelong reader and passionate devotee of 'slow reading'

    Upcycling-Fashion.png
    What’s it all about?

Upcycling is the new wave of sustainable fashion. During this class you will upcycle a pre-loved knitted jumper into mittens for the winter.

    What will we cover?

You will learn about the creativity of upcycling and why we need to consider the environmental impact of the fashion industry and our consumer habits. To complete your upcycling project you will learn the techniques of pattern making, cutting and hand sewing. In contrast to reusing or recycling, upcycling uses existing materials to create a new, one-of-a-kind piece.  You will give a pre-loved garment a new, more stylish life in this class and have some fun along the way.

What you will need to bring
    • a preloved knitted jumper
    • a pair of fabric scissors
    • Pen or Pencil

Thread, needles and tracing paper will be supplied for use in the class.

    Who will be teaching?

Shannon Threlfall has an extensive background in the sustainable and ethical fashion industry, including qualifications in Applied Fashion Design, Fashion and Textile Merchandising, as well as a Bachelor Degree in International Business.

Over the course of a decade, she has focused all of her research, both within and outside of her studies, on sustainability and ethical issues within the fashion industry.  Her research is in-depth in order to uncover both the good and bad practices of brands within this industry.

She is the founder of Project Selvage unravelling the fashion industry www.projectselvage.net
She has been upcycling since her early design days before upcycling even became cool!
