Life Learning - Edible Gardening in Geelong & Surf Coast

What’s it all about?

Are you wanting to grow more of your own food?  Not sure what you can grow around Geelong and the coast?  Have more of a brown than green thumb?  You’ll run through some basics of growing food before getting your hands dirty and planting a few edible and winter hardy staples to take home.

What will we cover?

You’ll learn about growing in our cool temperate coastal climate and how to get the best out of the seasons. We’ll cover soil preparation and organic amendments such as compost and manures.  We’ll look at organics and strategies for dealing with pests that don’t rely on harmful chemicals. We’ll discuss planning for success - where NOT to put your veggie patch in the middle of summer, and which fail safe varieties should you start with. Seedlings or seed? You won’t know unless you go! There will also be a chance to ask any nagging questions e.g. “what IS wrong with my lemon tree?” - a perennial favourite.

Renting? Well you can still have a thriving edible garden without your landlord giving you marching orders.

Who will be teaching?

Andrew has extensive experience in sustainability and permaculture. He has completed a Permaculture Design Certificate in Bendigo (2006) and studied Sustainability at Ballarat University. Andrew has performed roles such as a Kitchen Garden Specialist with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation and co-founded the Future of Local Food conference in Melbourne - now in its fourth year.  Recently he started a business specialising in Kitchen Garden design and landscaping called Backyard Harvest. Along with his small business he currently manages Geelong Compost - an agricultural compost operation which services farms and market gardens in the greater Geelong region.  He currently resides in suburban Geelong with his partner and son where they manage to grow veggies and fruit trees at a rental property.
