• Green Your Home community course - Grovedale

  The Green Your Home course will cater for people who are looking to retrofit their home and will focus on building structure/design and major fittings.  It will be a practical course delivered in 6 x 2.5 hour sessions. 

  Content: In this course, you will learn the five basic keys to a sustainable home:

  1) Controlling the flow of heat;

  2) Moderating temperatures through thermal mass;

  3) Generation of resources (water, hot water, electricity, food);

  4) Efficient use of resources; and

  5) Materials selection. 

  You will come out of the course with a clear understanding of the concepts of solar power, draft‑proofing, passive solar heating, VOC, thermal mass and other seemingly complex ideas.  You will know how to get heat into your home and keep it there, and how to keep it out in summer.

  
  

  Venue: Grovedale Neighbourhood House

  Dates: Sat 4th May, then 6th to 27th May (Monday nights), then Sat 1st June

  This getting started Living Greener course will help people to begin the journey to a lower carbon future.
  It will mainly focus on saving energy (and money) at home, understanding electricity bills and assessing the energy efficiency of household appliances.
  The practical hands-on course will be delivered in 4 x 2.5 hour sessions with lots of activities, guest speakers, site visits and demonstrations. 
  

  
  

  Course outcomes: You will learn how to:

  • identify easy ways to save energy, reduce waste and live more sustainably,
  • read and understand your utility bills (electricity, gas and water),
  • measure the energy efficiency of household appliances,
  • calculate your carbon footprint, and
  • conduct a home energy audit.

  • A comprehensive course manual with notes and worksheets
    
  • Loan of a Home Energy Audit kit for use during the course

  The Victorian Government is having  a regional sitting of Cabinet in Geelong on Monday 3 June. They are also going to hold a Geelong Community Meeting from 5pm to 7.30pm. To go you need to register by filling out a pdf and emailing it (see details at link below). The meeting will be about State Government issues but most environmental / sustainability matters are connected to the State Government in some way.

  IMPACT
  
  2013 is a huge year for the climate. As the world quickly approaches dangerous tipping points, it is a crucial time to be taking strong climate action. The science is clear: to avoid the worst climate impacts we need a rapid transition away from dirty fossil fuels to renewable energy.
  
  Power Shift will be 8 weeks out from the election and taking place amidst huge plans for coal expansion through the Great Barrier Reef. It wil be a crucial moment for young people to come together and demonstrate their passion for action on climate change. Together we can change the game on climate.

  WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
  
  Power Shift is not just an event, it’s a global phenomenon. It started in the United States in 2007 with a 6,000 person summit. Since then it’s gone global - held in Canada, NZ, UK, Sweden, Ukraine, Belgium, Europe, Africa, India, Japan and South Asia.
  
  AYCC started it here in Aus in 2009, with a 1,500 person summit in Sydney. Since then we’ve held it 6 times in almost every major capital city - except Melbourne! We think it’s time to change that with our biggest ever summit from the 13-15th July 2013.
