     --------------------------

Hints To Help You Maximize Your Membership.

    • Do attend social/swap meets.

It is no coincidence that the committee members of any LETS group trade the most.  This is because they actually MEET other members.  Once face to face, communication takes place and trading flourishes.  The social/swap meets are only held six times annually, so try to come to at least three (after all, this really means you are investing six hours per annum in your LETS group-quite manageable for even the busiest person).

    • Do negotiate clearly each time before you trade.

Always negotiate clearly.  Never make assumptions when trading.  If people have problems with trading, most of these problems stem from not negotiating clearly before they provide/use a service.  Also, please remember that while members of the committee will try to help you sort out any problems, they are not empowered to force an agreement.

    • Do be prepared to invest some time and effort.

Be an active member.  Do not sit back and wait for others to come to you.  (If you feel you need a "broker" to transfer when giving or receiving bollards? ask a committee member to help.)  People need to put some effort and energy into the system before they start getting any rewards.  Remember the LETS banking system operates on accruing time/effort/energy - not federal cash - and like any system, you will only get out of LETS what you put into it.  Do the best job you can, be a person that others will enjoy trading with.

    • Do treat each member you meet/trade with as a potential friend.

It is in your interest to deal with everybody in a friendly way.  The most successful LETS groups began in small rural areas where people were already a community.  By setting up LETS in a sprawling urban setting, we need to work at getting to know one another (in other words, come to the socials and join in as many activities as possible).  By forming supportive networks of trading friends (or at least familiar faces), we will make LETS user-friendly and achieve its maximum potential for ourselves and the rest of the group.

    • Do be reasonably accurate in advertised services.

Think carefully about the services you offer.  Although no-one is obliged to provide these at all times, do not refuse all the time.  If you are having problems getting people interested in your services, contact one of the committee members who will try to help you.  Usually coming to socials and meeting others gets you quite active.  If you have decided to remove an advertised service, tell the directory person as soon as possible.

    • Do not treat ? like federal money.

? are not cash - they never will be cash, and the equation of $1=1? is only a guideline.  If someone goes into ? debt" they do not pay interest, nor can someone "spend" ? anywhere else than in LETS.  Flexibility is the keyword for ?.

    • Do not use ? only for buying/cash only for selling.

After all, the whole concept of LETS is based on minimizing the use of the cash.  Spending only ? and charging only cash for services does become obvious to others and they will soon let you know it is unacceptable by not trading with you.

    • EVERYWHERE!

Be Kind to Animals Week is an initiative of Edgar's Mission, a farm sanctuary in Kilmore, Victoria which currently cares for over 200 rescued animals.

    Mission:

Throughout history, at every turn of human advancement animals have been there trotting along right beside us, guiding us to a better world. They have carried us into battle, helped plough our fields and provided companionship when all seem lost. For time immemorial animals have captured our fascination. They have infused us with a biology that has shaped not only lives but our hearts and minds. Now is the time to honour them.

October 1st to 7th has been selected as “Be Kind to Animals Week”. The reason for this is that October takes in several most important days for animals, the birth date of humanitarian and animal advocate Mohandas Gandhi on the 2nd, and World Animal Day along with the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals on the 4th.

There are so many ways we can help improve the lives of animals. It might be as simple as taking the dog for a walk, leaving water out for native birds. Or perhaps you may choose to adopt an animal from a local shelter rather that buying one from a pet store. You may even wish to make the ultimate kind choice for animals and that is to choose not to eat them.

Be Kind to Animals Week has been launched to inspire people by making them realise just how easy it can be to make a real difference in an animals' life.

    Products:

We want to hear from you.

    * Do you have any ideas you would like to share about what 'everyday' people can do to make a difference in an animal's life?

    * Do you have a story about what you have done to be kind to an animal?

    Introductory Course

(available tues mornings and thursday nights)

    http://www.schoolofphilosophy.org.au

Drawing on the great philosophic ideas of both East and West, past and present, this course explores the meaning of wisdom, truth, consciousness, the real nature of Humanity and what inhibits its development.

It is for all, regardless of education, age, race, political or religious beliefs. The philosophy of the course is that Humanity in truth is limitless and that there is a unity underlying all the apparent diversity in our daily lives. This is known as non-dualistic philosophy.

    Overview

Above all, this course is about practical philosophy. This means that the principles discussed in class can be put to effective practical use in work, study and every aspect of daily life. No previous knowledge of the subject is necessary.

Classes are conducted in a friendly and openhearted atmosphere. Philosophical principles and examples are presented to the class, and students are encouraged to discuss these in the light of their own experience and to seek further understanding of the principles by putting them into practice during the week.

Simple exercises are also given that help to strengthen attention and bring rest and clarity to the mind.

The course is offered three times each year, in January, May and September. See below for the times and locations of each class.

There are subsequent courses for those who wish to continue the study of this philosophy.

We run two PDC courses on site each year, and have been teaching permaculture for 17 years. This two week residential program is known for its blend of practical sessions, site trips, theory and active learning exercises. Come and live permaculture while you learn it. We offer real design exercises, small group and individual attention, and a range of teaching styles to cater for different learning needs. Our community atmosphere during the course will ensure you have fun while you learn and make lifelong frienships while you are here. Feel free to contact us before you register if you'd like to talk more about the course.

After you have completed the registration online, you will need to send a deposit of $100 via cheque or internet banking to confirm and to hold your place. The deposit is non refundable but is transferable for 12 months if you need to defer.

Rick & Naomi Coleman, Project Managers, of Southern Cross Permaculture Institute have been actively involved in permaculture application and education since 1990.

We are internationally recognised permaculture teachers and consult for a range of organisations, both in Australia and overseas. We teach Permaculture Design Certificate courses on our Permaculture property in South Gippsland, Victoria, Australia.

We run tours of our property by appointment, and conduct design consultancies for clients ranging from pre purchase assessments to sustainable property development plans for individuals and organizations.

With extensive experience in permaculture project development on every continent, Rick and Naomi are well placed to assist your organisation in identifying key priorities for a more effective and sustainable approach to a range of projects.

We specialise in assessment of community needs and resources, education of project field workers and members of indigenous communities, and design and implementation of sustainable solutions to a range of global problems.

Volunteers and Willing Workers On Organic Farms (WWOOFers) are an important part of our property development. www.wwoof.com.au
